George Balchunas is an associate in the firm’s Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Group, where he supports clients in complex restructuring, insolvency, and commercial litigation matters. He assists in representing creditors, purchasers of distressed assets, debtors, and other stakeholders navigating the bankruptcy process. His work includes drafting litigation and transaction documents, reviewing and analyzing court dockets, researching intricate legal issues, conducting due diligence, and helping shape tactical strategies to protect client interests and rights.
George is particularly drawn to the analytical and investigative nature of bankruptcy and commercial litigation. He enjoys working through complex financial and legal fact patterns, uncovering key details through discovery, and developing precise, well-reasoned arguments. His approach reflects a commitment to thorough research, careful attention to detail, and clear communication — skills strengthened during his tenure as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Law and Commerce at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
George has experience appearing in court and examining witnesses in statutory appeals during his externship with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and he has advised investors in disputes with stockbrokers through the Securities Arbitration Clinic at Pitt. These experiences, paired with his moot court work, have equipped him with early litigation and advocacy experience that he continues to expand at the firm.
George is motivated by solving difficult legal problems and contributing meaningfully to team-driven outcomes. He is actively developing both litigation and transactional skills to broaden the support he provides across multiple practice groups.
He earned his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he received multiple CALI Awards for excellence in Property, Commercial Transactions, and Business Organizations. He holds a B.A. in Politics and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh.
